Originally formed in 1987 the Post
Goughists are a collective of artists who acknowledge the Gough Whitlam government’s
position on tertiary education during the early-1970’s, as it was these forward thinking initiatives that allowed many
members of the Post Goughists to gain access to tertiary education. And represented
as cultural investments in the future, many Post Goughists have utilised these opportunities
to develop successful careers in the field of the visual arts. Over the course
of the past 27 years members of the Post Goughists have engaged in many wide
ranging professional interactions, adding to our social discourse and exhibiting
widely and individually. As a group the Post Goughists come together annually on
the anniversary of the sacking of the Whitlam government to celebrate their
roots, and to ‘maintain their rage’. This year’s exhibition at the Collingwood
Gallery not only pays tribute the passing of one of Australia’s inspiring
leaders, but also comments on contemporary
interpretations of ‘the right of entitlement’; suggesting that the arts are not
to be idly put aside or diminished, but rather are aspects of our culture that
are worth fighting for.
